What is Proof of work?
Consensus by spending compute to find a hash below a target; Bitcoin's original mechanism.
Miners race to produce a block whose hash meets a difficulty target. The difficulty adjusts so blocks arrive on schedule, which ties issuance to real-world cost.
Its weakness is energy use and mining concentration; its strength is that rewriting history requires redoing the work. Halving schedules are a direct consequence of it.
