What is Total value locked (TVL)?

The value of assets deposited in a protocol's contracts; its main usage measure.

TVL sums what users have put in. It is a rough popularity and trust signal, and a rough measure of how much a hack could take.

It can be inflated by counting the same asset twice across wrapped and re-lent forms, so compare carefully before treating it as an adoption metric.

  • Tokens locked in a contract that traders swap against, earning the pool's fee share.

  • Financial services run by smart contracts on a blockchain, without a bank in the middle.

  • The chance that a contract's code or admin keys take your funds, regardless of price.
